The OPod Tube Housing system is the brainchild of architect James Law of James Law Cybertecture who designed the build as a possible solution to the chronic overcrowding and lack of space in Hong Kong. With a population of 6,690 people per square kilometer in 2014, Hong Kong has one of the most competitive real estate markets in the world. Unveiled recently in Hong Kong, the tiny tube houses are created out of repurposed concrete water pipes that measure a little over eight feet in diameter. The tubes are designed to accommodate one or two people and come with approximately 1000 square feet of living space. The interiors are equipped with the standard amenities, including a living room with a bench that converts into a bed, a mini-fridge, a bathroom, a shower and plenty of storage space for clothes and personal items. According to the architect behind the design, James Law, the inspiration behind the tiny tube homes is practical, both for young people looking for homes as well as city governments trying to provide affordable options. Although the structures are far from being lightweight at 22 tons apiece, they require little in terms of installation and can be easily secured to one another, which reduces installation costs. The OPod can also be conveniently relocated to different sites. The structure is able to fill the gaps between existing buildings, allowing it to be tucked into locations where traditional construction is not an option. James Law Cybertecture envisions the OPod being installed in urban areas unsuitable for standard construction, such as narrow alleyways between buildings, for example. Multiple units could be stacked atop each other, with simple metal stairways providing access. Law explained in an interview with Curbed, that the concept is feasible for an Photo via Newscom

With space at a serious premium in many cities, some think that downsizing may be the answer to housing growing populations. Few homes come much smaller than the TIKKU by Finnish architect Marco Casagrande. It has a footprint of just 2.5 x 5 m (8.2 x 16.4 ft), making it roughly the size of a standard car parking space. The TIKKU, which is Finnish for Stick, was recently built for Helsinki Design Week 2017 and has a total floorspace of 37.5 sq m (403 sq ft), split over three floors. The prototype model shown is divided into a work area on the first floor, a bedroom upstairs, and a small greenhouse/living space on the top floor. It includes a dry toilet and electricity comes from solar power, but there's no running water or kitchen. The idea is that thanks to its location in a city, the occupant should have easy access water and food and whatever else they need. However, Casagrande has bigger plans for the TIKKU and envisions it also serving as an office, shop, workshop, hotel, and more, swapping out the interior and amenities to suit. He's already started selling units and the starting price for a basic model comes in at a??35,000 (US$41,500), not including transportation costs. Casagrande reports that it can be built within a night and that its CLT (cross-laminated timber) construction also means that no insulation is required, even during a Finnish winter. "CLT is five times lighter that reinforced concrete," says Casagrande. "With normal streets TIKKU does not require any foundation, it will just simply stand on the street. There is a sand-box in bottom balancing the building. 10 cm [4 in] CLT is plenty for the structure and 20 cm [8 in] CLT is sufficient even for cold winters. No added insulation is needed." New Story, a Silicon Valley-based nonprofit whose leaders have spent the last few years rethinking how to build safe housing for those living in extreme poverty, have teamed up with ICON, a construction tech company, to create a 3D printer that can build a house in a day for roughly ?£4,000. The printer, called the Vulcan, was unveiled at SXSW, along with a 3D-printed home that now stands in an Austin backyard. ICON has developed a method for printing a single-story 650-square-foot house out of cement in only 12 to 24 hours, a fraction of the time it takes for new construction. If all goes according to plan, a community made up of about 100 homes will be constructed for residents in El Salvador next year (2019). Because the homes are built using software, ita??s possible to offer families options for different designs, depending on family size. It will also be possible to quickly iterate on the design by making changes in the software. About a year ago, the company wondered if there was a better way to build. In the three years since it launched, New Story had gathered the funding to construct 1,300 homes and had completed 850 of them - but that felt like a drop in a bucket. "There are over 100 million people living in slum conditions in what we call survival mode," says Alexandria Lafci, New Story's co-founder and COO.
A company have created off-grid dwellings that can be assembled like "Ikea furniture". Backcountry Hut Company (BHC) say their Surf Shack model can be placed virtually anywhere - including having the materials dropped in by helicopter. The exterior structure is made from pre-assembled parts, and can be built up in modules ranging from the ?£34,000 single, basic module (191sqft) to four modules (937sqft). The interior design can be left up to the discretion of the customer. They can either choose from BHCa??s spec interior designs (available in frontcountry and backcountry options) or design the interior themselves. Canadian firm BHC engages with the client early to give them an understanding of the product and project budgets. They clarify the entire process and provide specifications outlining the total project budget, a complete permit package, and customised drawings. Their 'in-house' team of architects assist with permitting, documentation requirements, and customisation. A a??flat packa?? kit of parts is delivered to the location, at which point the assembly process starts. Co-founder Wilson Edgar says a team of four can raise the structure in less than a week, without the need for large excavators and other heavy machinery. a??In a lot of cases, our customers want to build on their remote dream property, as a way to escape the 9 to 5,a?? says Wilson. a??Some of those locations cana??t accommodate an intrusive, traditional building process.a?? a??Our customers seem to come from diverse backgrounds, but they all share an eye for design, and a creative desire to play some part in the building experience,a?? says Wilson. The first BHC customers have ranged from semi-retired professors, to younger tech workers. a??These are not 2X4 stick-framed, tiny prefabricated structures with vinyl windows. British engineers have developed an incredible ?£100,000 flat-packed house that can be unfolded in ten minutes. The adaptable unit can then be packed up with all its furnishings and transported on a lorry just as quickly. The creators of Ten Fold hope to revolutionise the UK property market by mass producing the stackable homes. Their aim is to one day create a product that can be both unpacked and packed up again using nothing more than a hand crank. That vision is still a few years away from reality but even so, engineers have succeeded in a creating a system that unfolds using an 18V handheld drill. Inventor David Martyn said its built-in folding partitions and storage space allow it to be used as a home, classrooms, business spaces, pop-up shops, hospital operating theatres and emergency shelters for refugees. Furnishing such as sofas, beds, chairs, and tables can be tucked away in storage spaces and the whole unit is folded away and relocated in a truck without any specialist tools. Mr Martyn and his team of four engineers have spent seven years and ?£4m developing and patenting their designs. The father-of-four from Wallingford, Oxfordshire, said: 'It is households and instant extra bedrooms, it's mobile operating theatres - none of which have been possible until now. 'The idea is that this technology could easily make a ?£100,000 home affordable.' 'It could make the option for someone to own a building who doesn't own the land. It will allow the young to get a building without owning the land, it changes the dynamics of the market which does need to change because it is a transportable property asset.' 'There's never been one before and this is a real solid building that doesn't have to stay in the same place.' The Ten Folds can also be fitted with solar panels and attachable units connecting them to the national electrical grid. NORTH TAWTON, UNITED KINGDOM - JUNE 25: Reporter Ruth Harrison speaks to Dayne Bendle outside his home in North Tawton on June 25, 2014 in Devon, England.

As more young Brits struggle to buy their first house, meet the enterprising 23-year-old who built his own - for ?3000. Like many his own age, Dayne Bendle struggled when it came to forking out the dosh for a deposit on his own home. But unlike many of his friends, who were content to live a little longer with mum and dad, Dayne decided to try a different tack. Within a year he has built his own cosy home in Winkleigh, Devon, without any knowledge of construction.

Our customer is looking for a recreational dwelling that is well-designed, with minimal environmental impact.a?? Wilsona??s Co-Founder is Architect Michael Leckie, Photo via Newscom

Could this micro house disguised as ventilation equipment help solve the London housing crisis? This week sees the opening of the 2017 Antepavilion, the first of an annual series of experimental structures to be built at Hoxton Docks, a complex of artistsa?? studios on the Regenta??s canal in East London. Designed and built by upcoming architecture firm, PUP Architects, this year's Antepavilion was selected from 128 proposals in a competition organised by the Architecture Foundation and sponsored by Shiva Ltd. The competition brief called for proposals that explored alternative ways of living in the city and engaged with issues of sustainability and recycling. PUP's design is a playful subversion of planning legislation, exploiting loopholes for mechanical rooftop equipment to be built without planning permission. Covertly extrovert, the snaking linear form is functional yet surprisingly sculptural and is clad in silver shingles cut from reject drinks carton material printed roll. The Antepavilion has been built by PUP with the assistance of carpenters and a team of volunteers, and technical support from structural engineers, AKTii. PUP Architects said: a??While permitted development exists for large scale infrastructural roof installations, little challenge has been made for other viable and productive uses for rooftops. By subverting the form of the permitted and giving it a non-standard use, we hope to bring into question this order of priorities.a?? Russell Gray, Director of Shiva Ltd said: "We are delighted to sponsor an initiative to encourage young and emerging architects, designers and artists with an appetite for hands-on construction, freed of the oppressive web of aesthetic, regulatory and commercial constraints that govern most urban construction projects." Living Small

Korean photographer, Won Kim has captured the essence of people living in a tiny, hidden Tokyo hotel in his latest series, Enclosed: Living Small.

The hotel rooms do not have enough headroom to stand up straight and are separated by unfinished plywood, with no windows and doors ? only a curtain at the entrance for privacy.

Kim stayed at the hotel in 2013, which is when he got the idea for starting this project. It costs around $12 to stay at the hotel and lots of local Japanese people and foreign students take up residence there for around a year.

?The atmosphere among those residents is pretty warm and they are friendly with each other. That?s how I soon became friends with them and they are not unhappy. I would love to live there for a while if I could. What I personally find interesting was that the messier the room was, the cosier I felt inside says Kim.

When asked how Kim managed to get a lot of the residents on board to talk about their experience in the hotel and to allow him to photograph their rooms, he explained that he promised each resident a 15-minute shoulder massage.

NORTH TAWTON, UNITED KINGDOM - JUNE 25: An inside view of Dayne Bendle's home in North Tawton on June 25, 2014 in Devon, England.

COULSDON, UNITED KINGDOM - UNDATED: Arthur Sharp and Lisa Luke's 3 boys namely Albert Sharp, 12, Arthur Sharp, 4, and Kenny Sharp, 2, are pictured in their flat in Coulsdon, England.

A cash-strapped family have decided to beat the recession - and a housing queue - by moving into a BUS. Arthur Sharp and his partner Lisa Luke spent ?2,000 on a decommissioned Bristol VR and are now turning it into a four bedroom home for their children Albert, 12, Arthur, four and two-year-old Kenny. The family, from Croydon, south London have been living in a three-bed council flat. When they requested a bigger version they were told the wait was six years. So far they have converted the upper deck of the bus into three bedrooms complete with bunk-beds for the boys. Downstairs a kitchen has been put into the front of the bus while at the rear a homemade sofa bed sleeps two while renovations are ongoing. They have been gathering amenities such as a toilet and shower from junk yards and they plan to make most of the furniture themselves. They hope to fill the bus with every mod-con including radiators, television, hot showers and microwave. And even though Lisa and Arthur know their bus will have a smaller square footage than their current home, they are excited about living in the great outdoors. Lisa said the family plan to move onto the bus full-time in six months' time when its renovation is complete.
